The speed limit in Ukraine.
Speed limits in Ukraine vary depending on the type of road. In some cases, the allowed limit is 50 km/h, while in others, it is possible to accelerate to 130 km/h without breaking the traffic rules. Therefore, to avoid fines, it is necessary to know these limits.
Speed Limit in Ukraine Within Settlements
First of all, it is important to understand that these limits are not set arbitrarily. They are designed for safety purposes. Not following the speed limit, as well as violating other traffic rules, can be dangerous for the driver, passengers, and others. This is the main cause of most accidents.
Within settlements, traffic is more intensive. There are many secondary roads, intersections, and active pedestrian traffic. Therefore, in such cases, you need to be especially careful, which is why the speed limits are the strictest.
Within cities or other settlements, the allowed speed limit is 50 km/h. In certain cases, additional signs may be installed with even stricter limits for specific road sections. For example, in residential and pedestrian zones, the speed should not exceed 20 km/h.
However, if the settlement sign has a blue background, it allows drivers to accelerate up to 90 km/h. Some relaxation of the speed limit may also apply on specific sections of urban roads where the traffic situation allows it. However, such exceptions do not apply during the winter period.
Changes in Speed Limit Rules from November 1st
Let’s start by saying that these are not really changes to the rules, but a seasonal adjustment of the speed limit. On certain urban roads, the speed limit during the summer period was up to 80 km/h. But from November, within the city, the speed limit on all roads is reduced to 50 km/h.
Speed Limit Outside Settlements
In Ukraine, the following speed limits apply outside settlements:
- On suburban roads, the standard permissible speed limit is 90 km/h.
- If the driver is on a road with a divided carriageway and appropriate road signs, they can accelerate up to 110 km/h without fear of receiving a fine.
- The fastest roads in Ukraine are motorways. With the presence of markings and appropriate signs on a green background, vehicles can travel at speeds of up to 130 km/h.
However, it is recommended to not only rely on available speed limits. Choose your speed based on the traffic situation, visibility, weather conditions, and the technical condition of the vehicle. Special care should be taken when driving at night. The optimal speed would be one that allows you to stop the vehicle within the visible section of the road in case of an unexpected obstacle.
Also, keep in mind that these limits are primarily designed for passenger cars. There are special limits for other types of vehicles and drivers with less than two years of experience.
Speed Limits in Special Situations
Additional speed limits, regardless of the type of road, apply in the following situations:
- If the driver has less than 2 years of experience – 70 km/h;
- Buses and minibuses carrying organized groups of people – 80 km/h;
- Motorcycles – 80 km/h;
- Passenger cars with a trailer – 80 km/h;
- Mopeds – 60 km/h;
- Buses – 90 km/h;
- When towing vehicles – 50 km/h.
Note that additional limits can also be applied by temporary signs with a yellow background. These signs must be accompanied by signs indicating the specific reason for the additional limit, such as roadwork or weather conditions.
Temporary road signs must comply with the current traffic rules and be installed according to regulations. If signs are installed incorrectly, the driver cannot be fined for not following them.
Speeding Fines for 2024 in Ukraine
Violating the established limits results in fines. In Ukraine, exceeding the speed limit by up to 20 km/h is not penalized. However, if the driver exceeds the speed limit by more than 20 km/h but not more than 50 km/h, the fine ranges from 340 to 510 UAH. The penalty for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h is stricter. In this case, the fine ranges from 1700 to 5100 UAH.
It is important to note that if the fine is paid within 10 days of being imposed, a discount is offered. In this case, the minimum financial penalty will be 170 UAH.
Conclusions
To avoid getting fined, every driver should know the speed limits for specific types of roads and vehicles used. However, the fine is not the worst consequence of exceeding the speed limit. Remember, following traffic rules is primarily about your personal safety and the safety of those around you.
